....in late mid to late October Baron had a few random episodes of vomiting. He had the same issue about a month prior. BOTH happened towards the end of a bag of dog food. I keep the dog food in the original bag, with the bag closed tightly in an airtight storage container.
Baron had two lumps removed at the end of October, and both were lipomas. Blood run prior to surgery was perfectly normal - no changes from blood run about 8 months earlier. He had a few more episodes of vomiting early last week (week of November 14-19), so I brought him to work on Thursday and xrays were done, more blood run and scheduled an ultrasound for 11/22. Blood was all normal except the Trypsin-Like Immunoreactivity test which was positive for pancreatitis. All week we had him on bland food and meds for vomiting, to which he was responding well. Stupid me canceled the ultrasound...
Tuesday morning he refused food and seemed to be painful in his abdomen - roached/hunched stature when standing or sitting. He came to work with me - something just wasn't right. Unable to palpate belly, we gave some pain meds/mild sedation, snapped four xrays - looking for ANYTHING that would explain what was going on - everything pointed to severe acute pancreatitis.
We admitted him to hospital and started an IV drip. Gave some more pain meds, anti-nausea meds and IV antibiotics, also drew more blood to send out. Tried to get ultrasound set up - either at the office or at referral ER hospital - but were unable to get anything set up that late in the day (it was about 4pm at the time).
When we left on Tuesday night he was resting as comfortably as he could. Ruth, the technician, came all the way back to work to check on him at 10:30 Tuesday night and he was sleeping - snoring away - she lives about 20 minutes away from the office.
Wednesday morning when she came in, he was gone...he passed away in his sleep. The bloodwork we sent out painted a dramatically different picture than what was run only 5 days earlier, but according to the doctor, there was nothing that should have killed him.
Doc felt his belly and was certain he had a mass on his liver and/or spleen that had probably ruptured. If we had gotten in for an ultrasound, I'm certain that we would have been told there was nothing we could have done for him...
He had pain meds on board with the IV fluids - I'm certain his passing was peaceful...
Baron was adopted in September 2004 - the shelter estimated his age anywhere from 2-4 years old - so he was anywhere from 9-11 years old when he left us.
I brought his body up to the facility we use at work to be cremated, and I will pick up his ashes on Monday.
It was only 5 months ago we said goodbye to Ben...and now Baron is gone. Now it is just 'the girls'...it is very strange.
